Working with clay fibers and coils is a dynamic technique that pushes the material’s limits while discovering new creative possibilities. It is very versatile, as you can work freely or very structured. The process involves balancing the clay’s flexibility and strength while ensuring it holds its shape, which requires patience and skill.
I used clay fibers and coils to weave and braid ceramic structures and baskets in this project. The result is airy yet solid baskets with a unique lightness despite their ceramic material. It’s fascinating to see how the thin clay coils hold their shape, balancing flexibility and strength. The endless possibilities in the size of coils, weaving techniques, and structural shapes offer limitless creative potential, allowing for a wide range of expression and form.
