DIY Weaving Plate
When clay, grass, and textile intertwine
By Kesem Yahav
This handmade ceramic plate features small holes, perfect for your ‘Do It Yourself’ weaving projects. You can choose any material you like for weaving, such as grass, strings, ropes, or textiles. Gather grass from your garden or a nearby field and weave simple crisscross patterns or experiment with more complex techniques using the plate’s small holes.
This plate encourages slowing down and engaging in creative experimentation. Whether in nature or your garden, the weaving process can be a meditative and intuitive art form, allowing you to follow your creative flow.
The DIY weaving plate emerged from an experimental project in which I initially wove clay with clay and then combined grass and textiles with clay structures. This exploration of contrasting materials, hard and soft, strong and fragile, thin and thick, orderly and chaotic, results in a unique and creative tool for artistic expression and brings a beautiful result in the shape of colorful ceramic plates weaved with grass and textiles.
This locally made ceramic plate is a beautiful gift if you enjoy experimenting with creative craft projects or a lovely gift for someone passionate about all things handmade and artistic.

How to start and weave using this plate:
- Choose Your Workspace: Pick a place that can handle a bit of mess. Weaving grass can be quite messy, so working outside (like in a yard, balcony, or park) is ideal. If you’re inside, just be prepared to clean up afterward.
- Select Your Materials: Decide what you want to use. Options include grass, plants, flowers, yarn, strings, ropes, fabric strips, tulle, and anything that fits your project.
- Prepare Your Grass and Plants: Collect grass from a field or garden. Choose a flexible grass with some elasticity. Green and not yet dried grass works best. Avoid very thin, delicate, or overly thick grass.
- Clean and Sort: Before weaving, clean the grass by removing extra leaves, though you can use it as is if preferred.
- Tools: To help with weaving, use a Needle Hook and a thick knitting needle, though you can do it without these tools if you like.
- Weaving Technique: Start with a simple crisscross technique, leaving extra length on the grass to tie or hide it later.
- Weaving with Strings or yarn is easier. Use a big, thick needle, keeping it tight and secure. Yarn can help hold the grass in place. Knitting yarn can also add interesting textures and colors.
- Securing Ends: Tying the ends can be tricky. Use the right type of grass to make tying easier and keep knots on the back for a clean front.
- Alternative Methods: You can sew the grass with a thin, almost invisible string using a small needle, or experiment with wetting the grass to make it softer.
- Add Extras: For a pleasant scent, incorporate flowers and aromatic plants like lavender, thyme, or rosemary.
- Use Tulle or Fabric: Tulle or fabric strips add beautiful texture and color.
- Experiment with Patterns: You can weave inside the plate or create designs over the edge. Be creative and intuitive, experimenting with different patterns. If something doesn’t work, you can always start over.
